IGBO AND REDUCTION TO IRRELEVANCE

Image
By Remy Ilona Most Igbos have been reduced to a level we are uncomfortable with. Either they are discussing BBN, Tonto, Kpokpogri, etc, or they are trading insults at a Buhari that doesn't even know they exist. Some of the right things Igbos ought to be engrossed with are: 100 years ago England had destitute people & Igboland hadn't. What didn't we get right that what we have today is that Igbo doctors, lawyers, scientists, will sell their ancestral lands to go & do boy boy in England? When we begin to think like this we'd have gotten on the threshold of recovery.

IGBO AND NIGERIAN HISTORY- Things that you are not taught in the universities

Image
By Remy Ilona If an Igbo is thinking that the Nigerian problem is exclusively behind the Igbo problem the Igbo needs to go to history.  Igbos, our nation had begun to decline before the British converted us to Nigerians. They were able to do this because we had started to become watered down. If we were still in the form we were before some turncoat Igbos got us into decline by participating in the Trans Atlantic Slave trade, Britain would have conquered every inch of the territory that became Nigeria without stepping into Igboland. But we strayed so what happened was that Britain conquered, marched and counter marched through every inch of Igboland, while it formed alliances with some of the other peoples that it turned into and later rewarded with Nigeria. When people talk about colonialism they fail to note that all the colonized groups were not treated identically. Nigeria is only a complication of an already existing problem.  I'm looking at history of this na...

IGBO BURIALS: THE WAY WE DID IT

Image
By Francis Duru I had known previously that in times past when ELDERS in our communities selected young men to go and fight wars, they would EXCLUDE young NEWLY married men who were yet to have a child.  Recently in my village we were at my Uncle's BURIAL and young men jostled to take part in the GRAVE-DIGGING but a certain young man was WARNED by the elders NOT to take part. I asked why and was told:  "Because his wife is currently pregnant". Waoooooo!!! I didn't immediately see the connection. They told me our TRADITIONS forbid that a man whose wife is pregnant takes part in grave digging. Then they reeled OFF the statistics of what happened to people who ignored this rule. They gave specific instances mentioning names. The wives LOST the pregnancies.  The father of this young man who is an elder in my village arrived while the grave was still being dug  and not knowing what had been discussed in his absence told his son: "Remember you can't tak...

A TALE OF TWO CULTURES

Image
By Francis Duru CULTURES are really so different and DEFINING. A 26 year old lady just called me NOW to break the news of her father's DEATH today and she was more or less Hilarious and upbeat. On the other hand I once saw a 72 year old man from another culture SOBBING when he received the news of his Mother's demise. YES he was 72 when his mother died and he still WEPT. The 26 year old would think that the 72 year old is CRAZY and vice versa. Why???? Because they belong to different CULTURES!

BEYOND THE FACADE

By  Chukwuemeka Obinwugo Many times I have seen people blindly argue on how being Emotional is a bad trait. Chukwu created Emotions for a reason and only Masters understand how to use it to create Prosperity. Actually, Emotions are more powerful than logic, if you know how to channel it properly. Emotions can Build or Destroy, it depends on the angle it is being used...  For Ọmalụ, Emotion becomes a tool for development, advancement and growth...  For Ofeke, Emotion becomes a tool of destruction, stagnacy and ụbịam. Recently, Nigerian Breweries, a company mostly owned by the Netherlands launched an advert that tapped into the Emotions of Ndị Ìgbò "Turu Ugo lọta" 😀 Ụmụnne m, Akpatoyi wụsịe anyị n' ahụ, anyị manisie enu maka advert ndị life beer, k'anyị chete kwa jụọ onwe anyị oké ajụjụ: kedụ ebe ego anyị ji gote nya bụ beer jebe lụ??? ÁBỤ́ZỤ̀ NA-AGBA ỌKỤ... : THE CULTURE WE ADOPT TODAY WILL DETERMINE OUR FUTURE.

Image
By Chukwuemeka Obinwugo There is this Igbo dictum "Ábụ́zụ̀ na-agba ọkụ, ọ che n' ọ na-áhà mmanụ". Ofeke na-ahụrụsị ji ya n' ọkụ, ndị enyi ya asị ya n' ọ na-akụnye ya na Ana.  Today we look at some successful societies and we wish to be like them. But many of us are not ready to learn and apply the tedious and tenacious process which these societies underwent to become a successful society today. Today in Ana Ìgbò, we look at Dubai and wish that Ana Ìgbò is like Dubai but how many of us have read the book called  "My Vision: Challenges in the Race for Excellence" written by the Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum?  Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in his book "My Vision" narrated on how his fathers started the process of Nation building since 1971 they got there independence. In explaining a National development he wrote, "A Nation's development, however, does not happen overnight or by accident. Nor d...
