WHY IGBOS RESISTED BRITAIN FOR 33 YEARS

For reasons I wouldn't go into we have invested little in important research. We know that Igbo society 100 years ago was far stronger than it is today. Igbos generally adhered to one religion, and assimilation of enervating foreign ideas and practices was minimal, but what specifically enabled Igbos to resist British aggression for 33 years?
THERE WERE NO KINGS. Had political & other authorities been centralized Britain would have simply won by beheading that authority. It's easier to kill 1 leader than to kill 5000 leaders.
