The return of Igbo polygamy will liberalise the Igbo husband market for marriage seeking mature Igbo women.
Mature Igbo women are Igbo women who are over 35 years and are not yet married but seek to be married. These ones are mature Igbo single women. Mature Igbo women also include divorcees, widows or single parents. Such categories of women are usually short changed in the outgoing strict compulsory Igbo monogamous marriage system. They usually find it difficult to get suitable Igbo spouses for marriage. The consequence is that most of them are frustrated to stay single or serve as hidden mistresses or concubines of Igbo men. Such relationships are illicit and do not allow the women to function fully as members of otu umunwanyi of the Igbo society which short-changes the Igbo society. Their children if they have any are also brought up with out the presence of an Igbo father which sub-optimises the Igbo child training of the child.
The return of Igbo polygamy will address the marriage challenge of the marriage seeking mature Igbo woman by addressing comprehensively the supply side of the husband market for the Igbo woman. More potential Igbo husbands , which may include those already married will now be available in the Igbo husband market giving the Igbo woman more opportunities and choices to choose from. The upscaling of Igbo husband supply will make it easier for Igbo women to find appropriate quality Igbo husbands for marriage.
Also, ability to bear children will no longer be the only yard stick for Igbo men to make their choices of wives. Other criteria will come into play: ability to stabilize the Igbo family, strengthen the Igbo family and help the Igbo family to strengthen its identified weaknesses.
Over all, with the re-mainstreaming of Igbo polygamy, we expect mature Igbo women of all hue to now find it relatively easy to get quality Igbo husbands. Mature single Igbo women, divorcees, widows , single parents etc will all find it relatively easy to get suitable quality Igbo husbands and on time.
Igbo women who are serving as hidden mistresses and concubines to Igbo men should step up their game and insist that such men conduct proper Igbo marriages for them so as to function fully in the otu umunwanyi of the Igbo society.
Igbo women are now empowered by the Igbo marriage reforms to conduct their love affairs in the open as second, third or fourth wives of the love of their lives as our illustrious ancestresses did.
Over all, the return of Igbo polygamy will enhance the status of the Igbo woman.
