About Pastor Reno, Kings, Israel and the Igbo
By
Francis Duru
Pastor Reno Omokri in his last trip into igbo affairs rightly NOTED that igbos traditionally had an aversion for Kings and then wanted to use that to separate Igbos from Israelites of the Bible who apparently loved Monarchs. The story of King Ahab and Naboth in 1Kibgs 21:1-19 is very instructive. Lets see:
1 Kings 21:2
"And Ahab spoke unto Naboth, saying: 'Give me thy vineyard, that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near unto my house; and I will give thee for it a better vineyard than it; or, if it seem good to thee, I will give thee the worth of it in money.'"
1 Kings 21:3
"And Naboth said to Ahab: 'The LORD forbid it me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers unto thee.'"

Any Igbo person reading this will immediately identify with Naboth. An Igbo man inherits land and holds it in trust for ALL the men that would come into his lineage in future. The land itself belongs to ChiUkwu and CANNOT be sold off in perpetuity. Not even to a King.
Would this ever happen between a Pharaoh in Egypt and his subject? Nooooo? Why? Pharaoh owns the land as a sovereign.
Would this ever happen between Emperor Herod in Rome and his Subject? Nooooooo? Why? Herod is the sovereign and owns ALL the land under his empire.
Can this ever happen between the Sultan of Sokoto, Ooni of Ife, Alaafin of Oyo, Oba of Benin in their domains? Nooooo! They are even deities of sorts. Whereas David needed to get a man killed to have his wife, these other Kings don't need to kill a man to have his wife. If they took a man's wife, the hapless man would in a yes sir yes sir three bags full manner simply say to the King:
"You can have my daughter too".
Israel didn't have this type of Kings. They didn't have sovereign power over land just as in igbo land today those caricature Kings have nothing other than land they inherit from their own father. Chinua Achebe has written in one of his BOOKS that it is OBVIOUS Igbos had very BAD experiences with some Kings in the remote past. Reno Omokri would NOT know this. He only sees that Igbos don't like Kings. He has no clue about the reasons for that. The rest of the story of King Ahab (1Kings21:1-19) tells us how much evil a King can wreck on his people.
For the avoidance of doubt, Israel eventually regretted asking for a King. It was NOT in ChiUkwu's original plan for Israel to have Kings. They literally forced G-d's Hand for a King just so they can be like the Nations. They regretted it later:
1 Samuel 12:19
"And all the people said unto Samuel: 'Pray for thy servants unto the LORD thy God, that we die not; for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king.'"

TILL today Igbos still struggle to BE LIKE other Nations. To copy the ways of their neighbours. Much to their hurt.
