WHAT IGBO DO AT THE OBI

BY FRANCIS DURU
When we say we are going to the synagogue/Obi on Saturdays as part of our Shabbat observance, what do some people think? Many actually think that we are WEIRD people who as soon as we walk into the synagogue begin to do the following:
1. Change into RED or WHITE skirt
2. Apply some whitish stuff around our eyes
3. Grab life chicken and begin to wave the hapless birds in the air
4. Chant strange incantations in a weird language. Etc.

NOTHING is further from the TRUTH. In reality we spend our time PRAISING and THANKING Elohim/Chi-Ukwu for ALL he has done for us throughout all the epochs in our history. We read Torah, discuss/elucidate it, we pray. In the solemn atmosphere sometimes you feel that Chi-Ukwu has descended into your midst. Hairs on my skin literally stand when the Priestly blessings are being pronounced and when we sing Yishtabach or Aleinu. Then we Bless and drink wine, break and eat bread and then enjoy a sumptuous shabbat meal in a family atmosphere. And we crown it with the Grace after meal. We are not weird people. We are a very ethical people.
