ALA IGBO'S TINY LAND AND OMENALA'S WIN/ WIN POSITION ON THE LAND/INDIGENESHIP QUESTION.
By Remy Ilona, Francis Duru and Okechukwu Ononaeke.
There is no doubt that the Igbo has the least land, compared to our neighbors. However, the Igbo does not and will never covet the land of our neighbors. The Igbo regards anywhere outside Ala Igbo as foreign to him/her . The Igbo could buy land and build houses in his land of sojourn outside Ala Igbo, but he is conscious of the fact that s/he is in a strange land. Why? This is because omenala, the Igbo supreme law and religion has a sacred attachment to Ala Igbo, the land of the Igbo. The Igbo regards Ala Igbo as a holy land along with Israel. The Igbo believes that Ala Igbo is CHI UKWU's sacred gift to him/ her and is tied to his religion, the religion of the Most High, Omenala. The Igbo for instance believes that to be buried outside Ala Igbo is sacrilege and that Igbo marriage conducted outside Ala Igbo is invalid among others.
The same Igbo attitude to the land question also underscores Igbo attitude to citizenship/indigeneship.
What is Omenala's position on indigeneship ? The omenala position on indigeneship is summarized as follows:
"We don't want any Igbo to be considered a son of the soil ANYWHERE in Nigeria outside Igbo-land, and no non-Igbo to be considered a native in the area in green-( see the map)so that there'll be peace"
Omenala position on indigeneship and the land question is a win/ win for the Igbo and her neighbors. Let everyone focus on his/ her lane for sustainable peace.
